My Lady Jane has sadly been added to the ever-growing list of streaming shows canceled after just one season. Despite being praised as one of the best shows of the year so far, the series didn't attract enough viewers to earn another season. While the story did end on a positive note, fans were understandably disappointed by the news, especially since the show only adapted the first half of the book on which it was based. The fanbase is already rallying to save the series, but as they wait to see if another platform will grant their wish, they might want to check out some other shows in the same vein.

With its seamless blend of comedy, fantasy elements, revisionist history and steamy romance, My Lady Jane had a lot to offer viewers. 10 Becoming Elizabeth Focuses on the Same Historical Figures as My Lady Jane

Becoming Elizabeth is a historical drama about Queen Elizabeth I's life before she takes the throne. After her father's death, Elizabeth gets caught up in the politics surrounding the crown during her younger brother, King Edward VI's troubled reign. As this unfolds, she starts to aspire to power herself. The show was critically acclaimed for its fresh take on the genre and its stars' performances, but it was canceled after just one season.

Although, like any adaptation, it has its share of discrepancies between fact and fiction, Becoming Elizabeth is a great watch for My Lady Jane fans looking to learn a bit more about the historical figures that inspired the show. She may not be the central character, but Jane herself is still a prominent part of the series. Had it continued for another season, it likely would have depicted her short stint as queen before launching into Mary's rule.

9 Good Omens Gives God a Wry Sense of Humor

Based on the book of the same name by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens has become quite the fan-favorite since it debuted. It follows the unlikely friendship between an angel named Aziraphale and a demon named Crowley as they work together to prevent the end of days. The show's second season received even more praise than the first, and fans are eagerly awaiting the third and final season.

Good Omens has some historical elements due to its many flashbacks and a love story at its heart, though it's much more of a slow-burn than Jane and Guildford's romance. It also features some major power struggles, even if the war between Heaven and Hell is quite different from the one between Verities and Ethians. While its satire is aimed at a different subject, Season 1's narration, provided by God herself, is sure to amuse fans who enjoyed the narration in My Lady Jane.

Miracle Workers is a comedic anthology series based on the writings of Simon Rich. The first season centers on two angels trying to save the world when God decides to end it. The second follows a prince and a peasant during the Dark Ages. The third focuses on life on the Oregon Trail. The fourth and final season is about a couple of warlords settling down in a post-apocalyptic world.

While each season is well-acted and hilarious, My Lady Jane fans might especially enjoy Miracle Workers' second season due to its historical setting. It may be an earlier time in history, but Season 2 explores similar themes through its protagonists, Alexandra sh*tshoveler and Prince Chauncley. Like Jane, Alexandra is a bright young woman forced to follow a life path she doesn't want but makes the best of her circ*mstances. Like King Edward, Chauncley struggles to live up to his royal legacy.

7 Our Flag Means Death Puts Its Own Spin on Real Historical Figures

Inspired by real-life pirates from the 18th century, Our Flag Means Death follows Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, and his relationship with fellow pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard. The two fall in love as they teach each other about their different ways of life, encountering lots of other infamous pirates along the way. Even though the series was unfortunately canceled after two seasons, it does end on a positive note.

Our Flag Means Death takes a similar approach to My Lady Jane, throwing historical fact out the window to tell its own story. It has also been praised for several of the same qualities, such as its comedy, LGBTQ+ representation and central romance, although Ed and Stede follow more of a friends-to-lovers path rather than Jane and Guildford's turbulent enemies-to-lovers arc. There's even some action and a bit of magic as the pirates make their way on the fraught seas.

6 Galavant Tackles Medieval Politics With Hilarious Self-Referential Songs

Galavant is a musical comedy about a knight who must find a new happily-ever-after when his true love chooses fame and fortune over a life with him. Rallied by a princess whose kingdom was taken over by the king who also stole his love, Galavant sets out on a quest for revenge, but not everything is as it seems. With plenty of fun musical numbers along the way, the series came to a mostly happy end after two seasons.

Like My Lady Jane, Galavant's songs cleverly poke fun at its time period and genre conventions. Its plot also revolves around a struggle for the crown with some fun, occasionally magical twists along the way, but at its heart, the show is a love story. Similar to Jane and Guildford, Galavant and Isabella are equal parts repulsed by and drawn to each other, but eventually, neither can deny the growing love between them.

5 Renegade Nell Brings Magic and Comedy to Its Political Conspiracy

Set in England in 1705, Renegade Nell tells the story of a young widow with super strength who goes on the run with her family after being framed for murder. Nell quickly becomes an infamous highwaywoman and is unwittingly drawn into a secret plot to depose Queen Anne. While it only got one season, Nell's story is brought to a decent conclusion, and the swashbuckling adventure is well worth the watch.

Renegade Nell features an interesting blend of history and fantasy, with magic playing an important role in the plot against Queen Anne and Nell's powers being granted by a mysterious sprite. Although romance isn't as central to the series as it is for My Lady Jane, both shows feature fiercely independent protagonists who aspire to more than society has in store for them. At the same time, they're also elder sisters who will do anything to protect their younger siblings.

Dickinson explores the life of American poet Emily Dickinson with a modern lens. From defying her family's wishes for her to marry and stop writing to her forbidden love with her best friend and sister-in-law, Sue Gilbert, Emily grapples with societal expectations as she strives to find her place in the world. Audiences were treated to three seasons of watching Emily become the writer she was always meant to be.

Much like My Lady Jane, Dickinson is less interested in historical fact than in depicting the titular character in a fresh way. While the former is more plot-driven and the latter is more of a character study, both Jane and Emily struggle to carve their own paths within societies that don't give them many options. Dickinson may not dip into the supernatural, but Emily's imagination provides plenty of fantastical sequences, and its contemporary soundtrack and sense of humor give it a similar tone.

2 The Artful Dodger Brings a New Twist to a Literary Classic

The Artful Dodger is a sequel to Oliver Twist that follows Oliver's pickpocket friend, Jack Dawkins, who has become a respected surgeon in Australia. His new life is turned upside down when his old mentor, Norbert fa*gin, shows up and drags him back into a life of crime, and the governor's daughter, Lady Belle Fox, blackmails him into training her as a surgeon. There are no plans to continue the miniseries, but its exciting misadventures and touching love story make it worth the watch.

Even though their circ*mstances are quite different, The Artful Dodger's central romance has some surprising commonalities with that of My Lady Jane. Just as Jane helps Guildford seek a cure for his Ethianism, Belle becomes interested in the medical field due to her own mystery health condition, which Jack later helps her diagnose. Despite initially butting heads, both couples fall in love as they try to help each other, giving way to a tender romance.

Acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, the anti-historical genre may have reached its peak with The Great. It reimagines Catherine the Great as an ambitious, intelligent young woman in a complicated relationship with her husband, Peter, who she's trying to depose. On top of that, taking over a nation proves more difficult than she anticipated, leading to some darkly comedic situations. After three outrageously funny seasons, the series brought Catherine's story to a close.

The Great doesn't add any mystical elements to its story, but like My Lady Jane, its protagonist is an idealistic monarch who wants to change her nation for the better. She struggles to get people to accept her rule and her beliefs, and her political troubles blend comedy with life-or-death circ*mstances. For viewers who enjoyed Jane's time as queen, the plot surrounding the crown, and the risqué humor, The Great is a perfect next watch.
