What month is best to go to the Outer Banks? ›

The best time to visit the Outer Banks is between March and May or September and November, when lodging rates drop and crowds dissipate. Most mainland North Carolina residents and out-of-towners arrive during the summer months, when humidity is high and average temperatures consistently hit the upper 80s.

There is so much history on the Outer Banks. Visiting in April/springtime means you can explore the history and attractions without the summer crowds.

In general, spring weather on the Outer Banks is mild, not too hot, and not too cold. It is not uncommon to experience an 80-degree sunny beach day during Spring Break. High-temperature averages during Spring Break are normally in the mid-to-high-60s, ideal for beachcombing or sightseeing during the day.

Savor a Summer Trip

Summer in the Outer Banks is the most obvious time of year to plan a beach trip. Whether it's by necessity or by design, visiting in June, July, and August is a first choice for most.
