I'm coming to Hatteras 4th Aug from UK for the first time with family, and I have been looking at the weather forecast, which states there are a lot of raininy day, does it rain for long in the OBX, as I'm trying to judge what types of clothing I need to take without over packing.
Anything advice anyone can provide for a first time visitor would be really appreciated of where to go, what to do.
thanks

There's a saying here: if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes - it'll change.

Yes, you might want a rain jacket (something light; August is still warm, and this year has been warmer than normal - fer instance, this a.m. it was 82 degrees at 5:30 am.) But we're talking thunderstorms that blow up the afternoon/evening and blow out - not days & days of rain.

I wouldn't call OBX a particularly rainy area. We've had weeks where it was beautiful and sunny every day of our vacation, maybe only brief showers/storms in the evening or early morning. Other times, we've had a couple of rainy days mixed in with some sunny days. We've never had an entire week of dreary weather, but I suppose that could happen. With the weather, anything is possible.

We bring along those rain ponchos that fold up really small. And that's really all we need in terms of rain gear in OBX.

Rainy days are good days to explore the various museums and other indoor attractions in OBX. And storms are very cool to watch on the ocean. So even rainy days aren't too bad when you're at the beach.

I can offer some advice, as my stepkids travel from the UK each summer to travel to OBX ! We call them the 'melty twins' when they get here, because they are never quite prepared for the summer heat 'down south'. Most homes have washer/dryers, so you don't need to pack a ton of clothes. I would suggest shorts, light shirts/tops, comfortable walking shoes and flip flops. Most of the restaurants are very casual, but if you want a nice evening out, a sundress is good for girls and for men shorts and a collared shirt usually work well. I would recommend at least one light jacket or sweatshirt, as you may get a little chill in the evening. Hats help to keep the sun out of your eyes and your scalp from getting sunburn, sunglasses are a must. And even if the forecast calls for a week of rain today, it will change by the time you get there.
Enjoy the OBX !

Forgot to add that the weather here is 80 percent "perfect" and as the previous posters said, come prepared for some rain on a now and then basis and it DOES change every 15 minutes. The South in general can swelter in Summer but the sea breeze keeps us cooler than the cities.

Where will you be staying? What types of things do you and your family/friends like to do? What are the ages of your party, ie do you have young children, teens, older adults?

Your coming from the UK... weather won't be your problem... bring lots of sleeveless shirts, shorts, and open toe anything for shoes. Light, bright colors, and be ready for tasteless, clear, cold beer. The water will be warmer than your used to... and the food will be outstanding. Soooo... are you a lucky one who rented their house and now are bolting?? Weather | OBX Connection Message Board (77)

Welcome.
I have never understood why folks try to keep from getting wet in a rainshower. Seen it at the Point and elsewhere when folks "gear up."
Seems like a lot of work and effort, and all still get wet. Cumbersome, hot wet clothes, more stuff to take off, umbrellas, etc.
Just go out and enjoy the rain, when it comes. wet t-shirt and shorts be a lot fewer clothes to dry out.
And, it can be kinda fun on vaca.
Just...Get...Wet

Bring shorts, lightweight/sleeveless tops, flip flops, and a pair of comfortable shoes, and of course a bathing suite. Typically it won't rain all day all week. I won't say never, because we actually had that happen where it rain most of the 5 of the days we were there.

Places to visit would really vary depending on where you are staying, however, definitely visit at least one of the several lighthouses. If you have an all day rain the Aquarium is a great place to spend the day.

Welcome to the board and hope you enjoy your trip.

Thanks so much for all the replied. I'm so excited. Going with my family who live in NY, they've been going to the same house on the sea front in Hatteras. There will be a large group of us in 2 houses, many nationalities and ages ranging from 10 to late 60's so should be great. I'm counting down the days now Weather | OBX Connection Message Board (109)
